Hatred Day

(Hatred Day, #1)

Chrysanthalix Press

YA Fantasy/Science Fiction
360 pages

In the year 2052, it’s not love but hate that unites the world. Humanity is unified against the Inborns, an extraterrestrial species with godlike intelligence and abilities whose arrival on earth caused an environmental and biological crisis.
Enslaved and despised even by her own Inbornkind, 18-year-old Snofrid reawakens to the world after having her memories stolen and is certain of only one thing: she will do anything to ensure her freedom. But her resolution is soon tested when the son of a high-ranking human official is murdered and her home city becomes the center of the interspecies war, one that might see the Inborns purged. Desperate to find a way out of the city for herself and her family, Snofrid risks making a deal with the manipulative Inborn Commander, Hadrian, and his brutal cadre of soldiers. Her task is simple: take part in a historic hunt that will bring wealth and fame to all who survive. Unfortunately, Snofrid’s role is one in which survival is rarely seen—the bait.

MY TIDBITS

I love the cover on this one and even before I read the blurb, I knew I wanted to sink into the pages. I was not disappointed.

This takes place on future Earth where humans and Inborns (aliens with special abilities in many ways like magic) live together, however not very peacefully. The authors do a magnificent job bringing the horrid state society has fallen into to life. The hatred between the races and among them plays a terrific background to the seemingly impossible spark of hope that somehow everything might get better.\v

The first scene already draws in with an attempt to rescue a seventeen-year-old girl, the main character Sno, from a slave auction. Although most of the book is written from Sno's perspective, this glimpse first from others' point of view made her situation that much more clear and desperate.  In other words, she's a character  to sympathize with from the beginning on. Throw in her memory loss, and who she is as well as the situation she's caught up in unfold at a pace, which allows the reader to discover everything with her.

The side characters are also well done. At first, she doesn't know who they are, and we get a glimpse at their personalities and actions without knowing the true background. Then, when the memories come rushing back, truth hits and it's as if a whole new world opens up. Although I first thought Sno's memory return hit too early, the timing fit well in with the rest of the plot, since there's much more to come than appears at that moment. Even at the end, there are still some holes surrounding the entire missing memory thing, but I'm assuming (and hoping) these are still to be discovered in the rest of the series.

Action, fight scenes and danger flows in abundance as Sno finds herself dealing with more and more problems. Not all of her decisions are wise ones, which did frustrate at times. And there are several small logic and plot holes, but in general, the story pulls through. I still found myself glued to the pages, wondering what would happen next. My biggest disappointment was that there was a last page and the story first continues in the next book.

Summed up, this is an action packed read, which is easy to get lost in. Fans of magic, monsters, aliens, dystopian societies and science fiction will enjoy this read. I'm looking forward to diving into book two.

This sounds very interesting! Plus, co-written by twins, that's really cool. ^_^
