Review: The Blue Tit Travels - Africa by Astra

After yesterday's journey to magical world's, today's book ditches the magic and sticks to the travel. The cover caught my attention on this one...and the Blue Tit. I can't think of a single book I've read that features a Blue Tit. And this one is cute and ready for adventure.

THE BLUE TIT TRAVELS AFRICA
by Astra
Pegasus Publishers
Picture Book
33 pages
ages 4 to 8

In this funny and beautifully illustrated first book of the series, follow the brave little Blue Tit as he discovers some of Africa's many amazing animals to understand that different isn't scary...

MY TIDBITS

With vivid illustrations, a lovely Blue Tit discovers the animals of Africa and learns something important along the way.

This little Blue Tit doesn't understand why the other Blue Tits only want to sit around and never fly off for adventure like some of the other birds. When it asks, they claim that it's too scary. But Blue Tit takes off to discover what Africa holds. Before the tiny bird knows it, it's facing very large animals....and they might not be as scary as the others claimed.

The Blue Tit is beautifully illustrated and remains the center of every page. At the end of the book, readers are requested to color their own Blue Tit, too. The other animals the Blue Tit meets are extremely realistic, and thanks to the black and white coloring, offer an intriguing contrast to the bright colors of the Blue Tit.

The story is simple enough and offers a nice repetition as the Blue Tit meets one animal after the other. The text, however, is on the heavier side. It works well for a read-aloud and can be used for those who have a more secure handle on words to read on their own. The vocabulary isn't difficult and simple for the younger end to understand.

Not only does this book allow listeners to visit their favorite African animals but carries the message that just because something is different, doesn't mean it's scary.
