The High Council Witch Chronicles, Book One
by Julie Catherine
GCMW Publications
Young Adult Paranormal
259 pages

When Mae Kingsley is forced to move into her family’s rundown lake house, she discovers small town living is not as simple as it seems. Bursts of violence, silent treatments, archaic rituals and two very cute guys with seriously mysterious motives all appear with the rising of the new moon.

But that’s nothing compared to the family secrets soon to be revealed. A box sealed in a vault, hidden rooms, naked swimming. There’s a trove of family revelations just beneath the floorboards, waiting to be exposed.

As the paranormal bonding season for the High Council Witches begins, Mae must quickly decide who to trust and who to fear before a deadly family tradition repeats itself and her chance to live a normal life completely disappears

MY TIDBITS

This is a quick-read, which snuggles together mystery, family secrets, high school drama, and so much more.

Mae isn't surprised when her aunt informs her that they're now staying at the cabin they were vacationing at. Her aunt has been moving them around to a new home every few years, but when it slips that Mae's mother also attended the high school there for a few months, Mae's curiosity is perked. Mae knows little about her mother, since her aunt stays tight-lipped, but as high school begins, the mystery starts to unravel in ways Mae would have never expected.

This read begins with a slower pacing, allowing the reader to sink into Mae's situation, her relationship with her aunt, and her first days of school. Things do pick up as Mae losses a keepsake necklace, and while interesting, this book seems to concentrate on laying the basis for the rest of the series. It does do a good job at this, too. While the mysterious side slowly unfolds, intriguing characters come into play, adding a bit of drama, humor, and a touch of romantic possibilities, too. While there is a romantic note, this stays behind the main plot as Mae tries to figure out the secrets behind her mother, as well as what is happening in the small town around her.

It will be interesting to see where the series goes from here because this was a nice beginning.

And here she is...
