Polly, Put the Kettle On: Sing Along With Me by Yu-Hsuan Huang

I'm a huge flap fan, when it comes to kidlit, and today's read has these! This is a book from a series, which showcases popular children songs. I haven't visited any of the other books in the series, yet, so this one is new to me. And believe it or not, I hadn't heard of this song, yet, either...but living over two decades on another continent also means that one misses out on some cultural changes (it's really interesting what happens that one doesn't know about).

Anyway, let's dive into this read. It comes out in December and is for the youngest readers out there.

MY TIDBITS

This is a fun way to combine an easy-to-sing song with the first glance at words.

This book is part of a series of board books, which take well-known children songs and bring them to life with bright illustrations and bold text. This one follows the easy sing-along, Polly, Put the Kettle On. While the illustrations and text follow the lyrics, a tab on each page allows the scene to change just a bit to follow the song and add some fun. There's a QR code on the book, as well, so listeners, who don't want to sing just on their own, can listen to the song while visiting the book or jump in and sing along with the music.

The scene is set in a cafe, where a Panda bear works behind the counter and places a kettle on the stove. The cafe tables are filled with friendly and inviting animal-customers, creating a cheerful atmosphere. There are little details through-out, making each two-page spread enjoyable to discover. Add a pull tab on each one to change the scene just a little bit, and it's an entertaining read on several levels. The text is written clearly and in slightly larger font, making it an easy read-aloud.

It's a simple book, which goes quickly...as does the song...but it's just right to be revisited again and again.
