MY TIDBITS

The importance of teamwork and sportsmanship comes across with fun twin style, while heading toward the fun sport of field hockey.

The twins, Mac & Madi, enjoy playing on the the field hockey team. With practice, hard work, and supporting each other, the game is more than a little fun. While they always give their best, sometimes they loose, but their coach is there to guide them through even these tougher moments. All is great until they find themselves up against a team, where sportsmanship isn't seen as important. Now, they have to figure out how to handle things in a way, in which all can still have fun.

I've read several books in the Mac & Madi series and was glad to see one, which addresses field hockey, since it isn't exactly as common as many other sports. The twin girls' enjoyment of the sport is contagious and will perk readers' interest in, maybe, learning more about it themselves. If nothing else, it's entertaining to see the outdoor activities, and it offers a great way to get readers outside to try a game of their own.

While the sport side is nice, there's also a great message surrounding sportsmanship and working together. The problem is very clear as the girls come up against unfair game practices, and the author manages to let it hit home before swinging it back around in a wholesome way.

Mac & Madi are always full of energy and kindness, and while there is a obvious message, it's still enjoyable to experience their interactions and the friendships they form.

The illustrations are simple and allow the story to unfold in an understandable way to help beginner readers tackle this book on their own, if they'd like. The text rhymes, and for the most part, this flows well. Those who are fairly sure of their words will have no trouble picking this one up on their own.
